Spring Break in Honduras

Most of my spring break was spent on the island of Utila, a sliver of paradise off the coast of Honduras. I met someone at the airport and spent the night at a hostel in La Ceiba after missing the ferry. La Ceiba had little night life action while we were there, but we had no problem finding plenty of bars near the hostel. The next day we hopped on the ferry to Utila and got straight to scuba diving.

I completed six dives while in Utila for a grand total of fifteen dives since being certified! Of all the scuba companies on the island we dove at Paradise Divers just two doors down from the ferry pier. They were great hosts and made sure we saw all the great sights. The most interesting dive was near the northern point of the island. It was home to a ton of reefs with a variety of wildlife. During the boat ride on day two we had the chance to swim with a pod of dolphins we passed on the way to the divesight. It was breathtaking to be able to admire them up close and be able to see them down below the surface. I was hoping to see a whale shark while on this trip but was happy just to be there and experience this high traffic area for scuba diving.

In between dives I enjoyed the coffee, baleadas, and the beaches. Neptune’s Beach Bar was a great spot to relax, get drinks, and enjoy the beautiful view. While relishing in the sun we were pleasantly surprised by two nurse sharks passing through. The tuk tuk, boat ride, and short walk to Neptune’s was absolutely worth it.

Another place worth visiting was Utila Chocolate Company, which is just a five minute tuk tuk ride from the main strip of town. A tour of the facility included an explanation of their chocolate making process and accompanied by samples of their many chocolate bars. We enjoyed their large menu of treats like frozen coffee and homemade ice cream.

I considered extending my stay in Honduras to visit the neighboring island of Roatan. I chose to go home as planned and little did I know it would be one of the last flights to the states. The day I left Utila for the airport was when the governor of Honduras made a statement banning all international travel to and from the country due to the global pandemic. While I left the island others were stuck on the Island of Roatan with little knowledge of when they would be able to return.
